Make the design clear before building starts

A good set of drawings communicates how a home is arranged and how the proposed work fits on its site. It gives your builder and consultants a shared reference, while helping you see the decisions that still need attention.

Which plans will your project need?

The scope may include a site plan, floor plans, elevations, sections and construction details. The exact set depends on the building and the work proposed, so a new home and an alteration to an existing house may need different information.

• A site plan shows the relationship between the proposed building and the block.
• Floor plans explain the arrangement and dimensions of spaces.
• Elevations and sections describe the building's form and levels.
• Details and notes communicate the agreed design more precisely.

Confirm the drawing list and the intended use of the plans before work begins. A concept used to explore an idea may not contain the information needed for approval or construction.

Already have sketches or plans?

Send Scott a description of the project and explain who prepared the existing drawings. If another designer owns the plans, clarify your permission to use or change them before new work proceeds. Existing surveys, consultant reports and builder feedback can also help establish what is required.

Understand the next steps

The building approval process is separate from drawing preparation. Depending on the proposal, engineering and other specialist documentation may be necessary. Agree who will arrange these services and allow for their costs when planning your budget.
